The Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare, Samuel Roger Kamba, took part in a press briefing this Thursday, December 5, 2024, to provide an update on a mysterious epidemic affecting the Panzi health zone, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The disease, which according to local sources has caused the death of several people, presents flu-like symptoms, including fever, cough and anemia.
In his speech, the Minister of Health described the alarming situation in this remote region, where access to healthcare is limited.
“We are on maximum alert. We don’t yet have the diagnosis to suggest a way forward for this disease”, he declared, pointing out that nearly 400 cases had been reported, mainly among malnourished children.
The disease has already claimed several victims. According to the Minister of Health, an estimated 40 deaths have been identified in health facilities.
Minister Kamba pointed out that 40% of cases concern children under five, who are already weakened by precarious sanitary conditions.
Roger Kamba also spoke of the logistical challenges faced by the medical teams dispatched to the area.
Due to impassable roads, the team of epidemiological experts took 48 hours to reach the area.
“We need a rapid and effective response to contain this epidemic”, he added.
The Congolese authorities have begun taking samples for analysis at the National Institute for Biomedical Research (INRB).
“These analyses are crucial to identifying the exact nature of this disease”, explained the Minister of Health.
While awaiting the results, he called on the population to strictly observe hygiene measures and avoid all contact with the sick.
Roger Kamba also asked residents to limit their movements in order to prevent the spread of the virus.
“We must act with caution and responsibility”, he insisted.
The Minister of Health stressed the importance of collaboration between the Government and international organizations to bring adequate medical support to the region. He appealed to the World Health Organization (WHO) for rapid assistance to help contain this health crisis.
Samuel Roger Kamba reaffirmed the Congolese government’s commitment to protecting public health and rigorously monitoring the situation.
“We will not let this disease compromise the well-being of our population”, he declared with determination.
The country’s authorities are continuing to assess the situation on the ground, and promise regular updates as new information emerges.
