DRC: IMF for economic governance strengthened by budget control

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has encouraged the National Assembly to work for better economic governance strengthened by budget control. The question was at the center of the exchanges that the Article IV consultation mission had on Monday, June 3 rd, 2019 in Kinshasa with the President, Jeanine Mabunda and the members of the Economic and Financial Committee.

Indeed, both sides reviewed the legislation related to the economic aspects as well as the role that the National Assembly must play for good economic governance.

« We discussed what the National Assembly intends to do to improve economic governance through parliamentary oversight to ensure better budget allocation, » said Mauricio Villafuerte, IMF adviser to the Africa Department and head of this delegation.

For this mission, the Lower House of Parliament will, through its action, help the government to mobilize more revenue and thus improve the business climate.

Article IV consultations with Congolese officials are coming to an end. This mission of the IMF was to make an assessment of the economic situation of the country. It should also make an inventory, analyze the macroeconomic policies implemented.

« We see that the country has managed to restore macroeconomic stability, inflation, the exchange rate », concluded the IMF adviser to the Africa Department.

The delegation which closes its mission in the DRC on Wednesday, June 5 intends to make constructive recommendations to the DRC including macroeconomic policies to support and support the country towards stronger and inclusive growth.
