DRC: towards the 1st disbursement of funds for basic education
The Government of the Republic has pledged to finance free basic education in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is preparing to disburse the monthly counterpart funds valued at approximately US$28 million, starting this September 2019.
The issue was at the centre of a working session with Prime Minister Sylvestre Ilunga Ilunkamba.
According to an official press release from the Prime Minister’s Office, Professor Sylvestre Ilunga Ilunkamba has given clear instructions to the ministers involved in this dossier to make free basic education effective.
At the end of the meeting, Willy Bakonga, the Minister of State for Primary, Secondary and Technical Education, confirmed that
« the central government will disburse, as of this September, the necessary funds to pay teachers and allow public schools to function normally. »
This justifies the National Executive’s commitment and firm determination to face its sovereign responsibilities in order to respect the Constitution of the Republic, which requires free basic education in public institutions.
It is to examine the feasibility of disbursing related funds that the Head of Government gathered around him, on Wednesday, September 11, the Minister of State for Primary, Secondary and Technical Education, Willy Bakonga, the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the Budget, Baudoin Mayo, the Minister of Finance, José Selé Yalaghuli, the Governor of the Central Bank, Deogratias Mutombo and the Director of Pay.
