As part of its global humanitarian appeal, UNICEF is requesting $52 million to meet the urgent educational needs of 480,000 children.
The appeal was launched in a press release issued on Monday, February 17, 2025.
UNICEF is also considering radio education modalities and accelerated learning programs to reach the most remote and marginalized children.
With the presence of mines and unexploded ordnance around Goma, including in or near schools, UNICEF will be raising awareness of the dangers associated with explosive devices.
“Over the past two years, we have invested heavily in learning structures in IDP sites around Goma. But these are now virtually empty, and we are very concerned that these repeatedly displaced children will never return to school”, emphasized Jean-François Basse.
UNICEF also calls on all parties to the conflict to respect schools and civilian infrastructure, in line with their obligations under international law, and to cease immediately any use of educational facilities for military purposes.
