On Friday November 1, 2024 in Inongo, the Steering Committee of the PIREDD Plateaux project adopted the Annual Work Plan and Budget (AWPB) for the project’s implementation.
During the meeting, decisions were taken on the next three years of the project in favor of local communities. The aim was to lay solid foundations to facilitate ownership and monitoring of the project by stakeholders.
“The Maï-Ndombe is a pilot province in terms of the feasibility of the REDD+ program. Especially with this first experience of carbon credit sales in our country. We are in the process of protecting our forests, which is why we support all initiatives aimed at consolidating this achievement. We would like to see the objectives set for the implementation of this project achieved. Aware of the fact that we have important assets to put in place a dignified and sustainable model of green development, we are committed to making our province a model,” declared the Governor of the Maï-Ndombe province.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has been engaged in the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) process since 2009.
In November 2012, the Government validated the national REDD+ framework strategy in the Council of Ministers. This strategy promotes sustainable land management and use to address the various drivers of deforestation and forest degradation in an integrated way, with a view to stabilizing forest cover.
